Right now I'm reading Eat, Pray, Love. I know, I know it's popular and trendy but sometimes things are popular and trendy for a reason. This book isn't a handbook or a how to book. It is simply a woman's story about a year in her life where she found some healing. The first portion of that year was spent in Italy. She spends time in Italy learning italian because it is a beautiful language. Her favorite word is attraversiamo. It means "let's cross over". People say it to each other when they are walking down the street. Attraversiamo. Let's go to that side instead. She likes the word because it sounds beautiful. I like the word for it's symbolism.
Imagine walking down the 'street' with someone you love and you want to go to the other side but it's just too much to do alone. Attraversiamo. Let's cross over...together. Or better yet. You want to cross over but you just don't have it within you to say it. The person you love and who loves you says it. Attraversiamo. They say it because they know you and they want to walk to the other side with you. It's beautiful isn't it?

ReplyDelete...imagine that there are many problems in life ... it would be nice if someone say to you "let's cross over these obstructions ... together ..." ... :)
But isnt it normal that if two people are walking, they know where they are going. and might have to cross street, and do cross when traffic is less. I do not see anything romatic except the word sounds exotic.

DeleteI watched the movie Eat, Pray, Love and it was the first time i heard the attraversiamo. I also liked the sound of it and loved its meaning/symbolism more! I immediately search the net for this word and it lead me to your post/blog! Thanks for sharing this.. attraversiamo is a word i longed to say to someone in the future or i longed someone to say to me someday. Life is a journey and i loved the way Liz journeyed to herself in the movie. I can relate to her because I always have been journeying within me. Regards!

'Attraversiamo'....the word is some what therapeutic.......you could tell it to your self when ever you are feeling drained or melancholy or even self pity!!! We could tell ourselves 'lets cross over' it's time to move on to 'eat pray love' again cz life is way too short to waste!!!
ReplyDeleteMy name is Jean-Claude and I have just been released from prison...I spent 6 1/2 years for larceny...I stole to support a drug habit...I have been clean now for almost five years.....ATTRAVERSIAMO is the epitome of my journey...I have crossed over with the help of the Lord Jesus Christ....today is Thanksgiving and I sit here all alone enduring the pain of solitude caused by memories of lost family, loved ones, and friends...my solitude is self inflicted...my past actions have hurt so many I fear to cause anyone else any pain...so I endure...ATTRAVERSIAMO...one day I shall cross over in a different sense and find the love without fear that I will hurt someone again...not in the physical sense, but you have to understand addiction to unbderstand the pain...daily...daily..ATTRAVERSIAMO...I cross to the otherside searching...reaching...longing...just for today though God gives me the strength...ATTRAVERSIAMO...

DeleteAnonymous...you're not getting the symbolism. It's not necessarily about crossing the street. It symbolizes crossing over things like obstacles we come across in our lives, or crossing over to a new chapter in our lives...getting someplace together ( metaphorically). Getting through hard times together to get to a better place in our lives. It is beautiful in meaning as well as the way it sounds. Look a little deeper. Don't always take everything so literally and at face value.

ReplyDeleteItalian is overrated; or I don't think it is such a big deal myself. The only thing is that attraversiamo encapsulates 3 english words. But then I'm sure it goes both ways.

I have been seeking greater wisdom in my life and found this at just the right time. Hopefully it will help others on a similar quest. I also highly recommend reading the "life and teachings of Jesus Christ" from the Urantia Book. It is a great read even if you consider yourself non-religous, maybe especially if you do... cheers.

ReplyDeleteI am Italian-American and was looking for a word with meaning as a tattoo. I have two daughters who I plan to have their initials tatooed on my left and right wrist. I think this word tatooed on my back will be a hugely symbolic addon as a father. Just as I help them to cross the road hand-in-hand, I will always be there for them, to guide and protect them, to prepare them for challenges ahead. Also without them I would not be where I am in life to "cross over" with them.
